About the Island of Amorgos
Amorgos (ahh-moore-ghoss) is the easternmost island of the Greek Cyclades island group and has had a long human presence since the 5th millennium BC.
Monks fleeing Arab incursions into Palestine took refuge on the island and established their community in the most impossible site of all, the 1000 year old Monastery of Panagia Chozoviotissa, built in the cliffs 300 meters above the sea. We will tour this and the Byzantine Monastery of St George Valsamitis, built upon the ruins of an ancient water oracle dedicated to god Apollo.
Amorgos is known worldwide for its hiking trails. There are several marked paths to explore. Many of them are old donkey routes that connect the villages.
